Synthetic Wigs

Shelli Beach Wigs, Toppers & more! Brands are Jon Renau,

Estetica, Envy, and soon to come, Aderans and Rene of Paris & Private Label.

Synthetic wigs can be best described as what you see is what you get. They are pre-styled and pre-colored. A synthetic wig lasts about 4-6 months depending on how well they are cared for and the amount of use.

They are made of strands of man-made materials, such as plastic, acrylic, or polyvinyl. The fibers are made to closely resemble the look and movement of real hair depending on the quality of the fiber. Their construction can vary from wefting (permatease) and lace frontals which are a better quality, or a monofilament top that resembles a natural part.

The Pros: They are more affordable, wide variety of colors & styles, are easy to take care of and the style remains the same through washings.

The Cons: They can be shiny, shorter lifespan than human hair wigs, and style cannot be changed nor can they be colored. Usually cannot be straightened or curled unless it is the more expensive heat-friendly synthetics.

Heat-Friendly Synthetic Wigs

Pros: lower cost than human hair wigs, easy to care for, can use heat tools up to 275 degrees, keeps its style thru washes, looks more similar to human hair, very lightweight.

Cons: lighter colors can be a little shiny, cannot be dyed, are still prone to heat damage from too high of heat, can get crunchy on the ends from too much heat, and static electricity from rubbing on your neck or shoulders. A shorter style will usually correct the static issue.

Wigs that are a blend of human hair (30%) and synthetic (70%)

Pros: generally lasts longer than a synthetic wig, can be heat styled (275 degrees) uses a lusterizer to keep the condition better, looks like real hair, is usually a lighter weight especially if hand tied. Looks more realistic with a monofilament top or lace edge or both.

Cons: more expensive, and can still get rough on the ends if it is rubbing on the neck shoulders, or back as with all synthetic.

Human Hair Wigs Products

Human hair wigs will look the most natural of any wig fiber. They look the most natural with a lace edge (if your hair is worn up and over, no bangs) and a monofilament top to simulate a real scalp. Depending on the origin of the hair can repel the humidity better than fine thin hair that has a thinner denier to the shaft.

Pros: they can last for a year or more depending on how well you care for them, they look, feel, and move more like your own hair especially if hand-tied. You can lowlight (highlight if unprocessed virgin hair) and style like your own hair yet maintain the style longer since you are not styling it as often nor sleeping in it. It doesn't produce natural oils so no need to wash near as often unless you perspire a lot. There are wig grips with a cap that can create a barrier for this issue.

Cons: more expensive, more maintenance depending on the cut or style, color can fade over time but an ammonia-free color or gloss by your stylist can remedy this.

I recommend a synthetic wig as an alternate that can help alleviate the situation.
